London Middlesex Immigrant Employment Council (LMIEC)

With an aging workforce and declining birthrate, Canada’s entire net labour growth will come from immigration in less than three years.  London-Middlesex employers are facing increased competition with other businesses throughout the province, across the nation and around the globe for this pool of international talent.   At the same time, the skill sets of internationally trained individuals or skilled trades persons are often not recognized or de-valued by regional employers.

To address this issue, the Employment Sector Council London-Middlesex (ESCLM) established the employer-driven LMIEC, formerly known as the London-Middlesex Immigrant Employment Task Force (LMIETF) in February 2007, based upon a community recommendation through the 2006 Welcoming Cultural Diversity Action Plan.  From 2007-2008, London-Middlesex executives came together to collectively develop employer-driven strategies designed to reduce barriers immigrants face when trying to connect to the local labour market.  Over 40 regional stakeholder institutions actively contributed to the development of the Employer Leadership Strategy, an LMIEC Go-to-Market Plan, through that process.

With the support of regional stakeholders, regional employers will now implement the LMIEC Go-To-Market Plan by acting as an Employer Leader within their companies, business networks/professional associations, industry sectors and/or client base of small to medium sized enterprises.
