Skills International has been funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation to design and install 20 stand-alone job interview kiosks for community-based employment agencies and resource centres throughout the province. The kiosks will provide improved access to practice interview resources and software for internationally trained individuals with the goal of improving employment outcomes. Kiosks will be outfitted with a video camera and computer screen that will prompt participants through the job interview process by randomly selecting commonly-asked interview questions from a database. Participants will be able to practice their answers to each question and view instant video playback to critique their performance. A job interview can be a very stressful event, and the only way to master the skill is through continued practice. In focus groups, employers have indicated that job applicants need to better prepare for the Canadian job market by improving their marketing and interviewing skills. Many internationally trained individuals have excellent resumes and qualifications, but are often overlooked because they are unable to describe their skills and experience in an interview. The Skills International kiosks will improve participants’ language and presentation skills, allowing them to gain more confidence in an interview and improve their chances of finding suitable employment. Kiosks will be installed in all regions of the province: 12 in the GTA; 3 in eastern Ontario; 3 in southern Ontario; 1 in northern Ontario; and 1 in the Barrie area. Skills International is currently developing an additional 200 interview questions to target specific occupations and industries. It is anticipated that the kiosks will be installed in all locations by the end of summer. The long-term objective is to extend the application to employers so that they can submit interview requests to clients profiled on Skills International.
